Ashley’s Graduation Speech:
President Cheng, Ying-Yao, members of faculty, distinguished guests, and my fellow graduates, today we celebrate a milestone. After four consecutive years of last-minute uploads to Cyber University, late nights cramming for exams, and early morning runs for coffee - we did it! Our hard work has finally paid off, and we are now Zhongshan University graduates. With utmost admiration and respect, I say congratulations to the class of 2022. And to our most beloved family, instructors, monkeys, and local Starbucks shop thank you for your loyalty and support over the years and for making today possible.
As I stand before you, I am overwhelmed with emotions and recollections. I recall vividly that my first day at National Sun Yat-sen University began with a forty-five-minute commute from Nanzih district to Gushan. The car ride was long, and I felt anxious about fitting into my classes as an international student. However, as I passed the university's entrance and drove up the hill towards the Liberal Arts College, I saw the far-reaching sea to the left and the magnificent mountains on the right, and instantly I felt at ease. I would continue to make this lengthy and tedious journey from Nanzih to Gushan for another three years, and each time I would arrive at the entrance and drive up the hill toward the Liberal Arts College, I would put down my window and take in the same sights, the same sounds, and the same smells as I did on that very first day. It is these small moments and details that I will never forget.
As I prepare to depart the university and take one final goodbye drive around campus with a happy but heavy heart, I leave you these closing words: true happiness and success in life come from finding your passion and pursuing it. At the beginning of my studies, I was a very insecure and quiet student hiding away in the shadows of the classroom. However, after taking a European Literature course with Professor Rudy, I discovered my hidden passion and strength for literature. In pursuing what made me happy, I became an active and confident student in the classroom and an ambitious and enthusiastic scholar in academia. I intend to continue to follow my passions in the future by becoming a Canadian diplomat so that I can one day return to Zhongshan University and Taiwan and help improve the social, economic and political ties between my homeland and the island that has given me so much.
Graduates, as you prepare to take control of the steering wheel of your life, be mindful that setbacks and minor detours are normal. But if you ever feel lost or unsure about where you are in life, remember your years at Zhongshan University. Remember the lessons you learned, the friendships you made, and the comforting far-reaching sea to the left and the magnificent mountains to the right. And most importantly, remember to follow your passion. Collectively, these will help steer you in the right direction.
To my friends, while we may not cross paths anytime soon, I know we will someday meet again here at Zhongshan University. And to my family, I love you so much- let us go towards our future!
